MEET THE PANELISTS:

Miyoko Schinner

You probably know her as the epicurean queen of vegan cheese, but she is so much more than that: a vegan chef, cookbook author, and social entrepreneur, Miyoko has authored several influential vegan cookbooks, including "Artisan Vegan Cheese" and "The Homemade Vegan Pantry." She also co-hosted the PBS cooking show "Vegan Mashup”. And if that wasn't enough, she founded Rancho Compasión, a farmed animal sanctuary in the Bay Area.

As one of the prominent BIPOC vegans advocating for plant-based diets and ethical food systems, emphasizing sustainability and compassion, we are beyond thrilled to have her join our first ever virtual fundraiser and year-end celebration!

Sterling “TrapKing” Davis

If you've been following Sterling, you know him as a music enthusiast and cat lover who transitioned from a music career to animal welfare - now that's a career trajectory we need to see more of!He is also founder of TrapKing Humane Cat Solutions, which focuses on trap-neuter-return (TNR) to manage cat populations humanely.

Sterling is also known for speaking at events like Cat Con and Cat Camp where he advocates for community cat care. He's especially remarkable for reaching out to different communities through his TNR work to inform young men of color that “you don’t lose cool points for compassion”.

Sterling's advocacy includes talking about hypermasculinity as deterring Black men from volunteering and working with cats - a dynamic which he actively works to undo and which is necessary for us to dismantle both the patriarchy and yt supremacy. He also talks about challenging harmful stereotypes like “crazy cat lady” (much needed, thank you Sterling!) and also has the cutest feline friends on all of instagram - check out his profile to see them for yourself!

Syl Ko

Many of us in the collective liberation space have been following Syl Ko since the publication of her revolutionary take on the intersections of race and animality in Aphro-Ism (which she co-authored with her sister, Aph Ko). Beyond her authorship, Syl is an independent researcher and philosopher known for integrating race into the animal rights movement.

She advocates for a multispecies justice approach, challenging traditional animal liberation narratives (such as the concept of ‘speciesism’ as a singular form of oppression affecting only nonhumans) and emphasizing the racial dimensions of animal subordination.

Christopher Sebastian

Christopher is best known for his radical takes on all things food, politics, media, and pop culture - check out his posts on the recent "Wicked" movie for truly piercing commentary. An acclaimed writer with over a decade of experience in technical writing and education, he has taught courses like News Writing for Social Media and guest lectured at  Columbia University and the University of Oxford.

A consistently reliable supporter of APEX, we are grateful for Christopher's participation in our first-ever virtual fundraiser and community celebration.
