The Human Animal Project

APEX Founder Chris Eubanks and Director of Activism, Yvette Baker, were joined virtually by Syl Ko to conduct a whirlwind speaking tour across South Africa in October. They spoke on APEX’s approach to intersectional animal advocacy, and why the liberation of beyond-humans cannot be achieved as a single-issue mission.

No Backyard Slaughter

One of our flagship campaigns was the No Backyard Slaughter campaign. It was created with the intention of shutting down slaughterhouses operating in residential areas where the environmental and psychological toll of animal slaughter most impacted BIPOC communities. We identified one such slaughterhouse in Dekalb County, Georgia, known as Bradford Livestock, in a majority-Black area, which was operating for almost a decade without a permit just one block away from an elementary school. Over 100 animals a month were slaughtered on-site at this slaughterhouse. With the help of residents and community leaders, we were able to execute a pressure campaign on the local government and shut down the slaughterhouse permanently!

This is a major win for humans and animals alike in numerous ways. With this victory, we officially retired the No Backyard Slaughter campaign.

Black Vegan Everything

Black Vegan Everything was a directory of not just vegan food but everything and anything to do with a vegan lifestyle. The project was created solely for the purpose of highlighting intentionally, Black-owned vegan businesses, ventures and campaigns. The BVE website was replete with articles, a vegan food and lifestyle section that showcased the full spectrum of veganism within the African Diaspora. In mid-2023 we halted work on this campaign as it was deemed outside the scope of APEX’s organizational focus.
